Namma Metro
Bengaluru is the Technology hub of India and is quickly transforming today into the Startup Capital of the world. Known for its old world charm, blooming gardens and splendid weather, the city extends a warm welcome to all.
Bengaluru Metro Rail’s identity is a reflection of the city’s vibrant culture and its persona.
With booming startups and booming growth comes booming traffic. India’s Garden city has a bad reputation for its crazy traffic. Jokes about surviving Bengaluru’s traffic are actually a grim reality. Bengaluru Metro conceived more than a decade ago to tackle this enormous problem eventually took to the ground in early 2000s.
With its transition from concept to reality, it needed a face to reignite hopes that the city could be livable again, tree-lined roads could still be omnipresent, and you could still put Rangoli at your doorstep without vehicles trampling on it.
BMRC called out the citizens to design a new Identity, a symbol of this optimism and hope.
Our inspiration was the local tradition of Rangoli – patterns drawn across the porch as an auspicious and welcoming sign. A conscious design decision was also not to base the identity on arrows or ‘M’ so it stands out in a crowd of similar identities of many global Metros.
The Identity was chosen by a panel of Branding experts with the final adaptation suitably fine-tuned – our design became the new face of Bengaluru’s Metro.
We designed a pattern – a seamless double-tracked loop reaching across the four corners and intersecting at the center. The Identity signifies how the Metro Rail provides a smooth and effortless ride across the city.
It is a contemporary representation of a traditional art. The green color is symbolic of the Garden City, as also the eco-friendly pollution-free Metro Rail. The purple color exemplifies technology and modernity. The Metro Rail is known as “namma Metro”, or, “our Metro”.
The Metro rail cris-crossing the city against a scenic backdrop of its iconic greenery is a reassuring sight today.
The Identity has now become one of the most recognizable icons of Bengaluru.
More endearing has been the warmth with which millions of Bengalureans have welcomed it. It has grown to be a mark of their hopes of a better tomorrow.
